Alone Mothers Together Project

Support groups via the Internet

Project will provide support to lone moms via the Internet

Dr. Ellen Lipman has devised a novel approach to reach rural and isolated lone moms with support/education groups that can improve their own and their children’s mental health.  She has applied for funding to offer the groups via the Internet.

The proposal would see mothers provided with computers, web cameras and Internet hookups so that they can talk face-to-face without ever having to leave their home.  The moms will also have access to a web site providing information and links to helpful programs and services.

Typically offered in a community setting, the groups have been found to improve the self-esteem and mood of lone mothers and to reduce behaviour problems in their children.  However, many mothers are unable to participate because they lack of transportation or can’t afford babysitting costs.
