An endowed research chair, named for Dr. Dan Offord, founder of the Centre for Child Studies that bears his name will be a legacy for generations to come. This new research chair will assure that Dr. Offord’s vision will prosper and grow.
The Dan Offord Research Chair in Child Studies will:
- Advance critically-needed studies to increase knowledge and to develop new interventions / approaches
- Allow an expansion of current work
- Provide resources to pursue new areas of research
- Act as a motivator to attract more people to pursue research careers in child studies
- Support the training and mentoring of the next generation of scientists
- Encourage further funding of research projects
Research Fellowships
The Offord Centre for Child Studies is dedicated to developing a comprehensive training program that brings together the best and brightest young scientists to teach them how to conduct research with immediate clinical relevance and the highest scientific standards.
Many bright young scientists have turned away from research because it is so difficult to get funding. There are too few doctors and other health professionals who are trained in research methods of children’s mental health.
Endowed Research Fellowships provide a permanent source of support for early career researchers. Because endowed fellowships benefit a succession of recipients, donors providing this generous level of support will sustain and encourage many generations of young scholars to pursue a career in research.
Research Fellow Sponsorships provide the funding needed for early-career scientists to establish their independent research projects and to successfully obtain research grants to sustain their research into the future.
Research Fellowships are awarded on merit and encourage early career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise to pursue a career in research. Financial support is crucial in the early years of a researcher’s career and often pays handsome dividends later on.
Education & Awareness
Over the past ten years, there has been an explosion of literature on the latest research and effective treatments for children and youth. Yet it is often difficult for parents, teachers, clinicians and policy makers to know what is the best available evidence on children’s mental health. The Offord Centre for Child Studies is committed to ensuring that knowledge is transferred from academic circles into the community. This includes:
- Provision of an accessible and trustworthy website
- Regular communications including the development and publication of printed materials to be distributed to parents, professionals and community organizations
- Seminars, information evenings and conferences at which leading scientists share the latest and most-up-to-date information on healthy child development
A named Research Dissemination Endowment will provide a permanent source of support to translate the latest scientific research into easy-to-understand, accessible and trustworthy information for parents, professionals and community organizations.
Research Dissemination Sponsorships will provide sufficient resources to staff and carry out this important communication and information-sharing program for three years.
